This article explains how the drought has effected farmworkers in California, and especially strawberry farmers. Because the drought is making it harder and harder for farmers to conduct operations, many must simply sell their fields and fallow the ground. As a result, there is less and less work available for farmworkers. In a sense, farming is like an ecosystem. In an ecosystem, if a precious resource is becoming more limited, the organism next up in the food chain will suffer, thus causing the whole ecosystem to suffer. Farming is the same; farmers require water in order to operate there farms. Because of the drought, farms are suffering and therefore, farmworkers are suffering.
I chose this article because so that people may take the drought more seriously. My father is a farmer, and I often hear stories at the dinner table of a fellow farmer who had to rip out hundreds of acres of trees because of the lack of water. If people do not care about the farmers because they are “greedy” and “harmful to the environment”, they should at least do their part to help the drought for the sake of farmworkers who cannot survive without work.
